The challenge

Field Notes publishes essays of up to ten thousand words, but its old site buried them under pop-ups and sidebars. Readers rarely made it past the first few paragraphs.

The approach

I designed a typographic system tuned for long reading sessions, with a comfortable line length, a progress indicator and footnotes that open in place. The editors got a simple CMS that publishes straight to the site without a developer.

The outcome

Average reading time doubled after launch, newsletter signups from essays rose by 63 percent, and the editorial team now publishes twice as often.
